Psychiatry

reports

A psychiatrist is a medical practitioner specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. Psychiatrists complete their medical degree and their basic medical and surgical training to become doctors, and then go on to specialise in psychiatry (a medical speciality).

Role of a psychiatry
expert witness

All MLUK psychiatrists are Section 12 approved clinicians, recognised under the Mental Health Act as experts in diagnosing and treating mental disorders.

Why choose MLUK psychiatrists?

We cover every branch of psychiatry, including:

  • Forensic psychiatry
  • Older age psychiatry
  • Adults of working age
  • Child & adolescent psychiatry
  • Neuropsychiatry
  • Intellectual disability
  • Medical psychotherapy

Our psychiatrists are:

  • Specialists in their fields with Certificates of Completion of Training
  • Experienced expert witnesses with a full understanding of Civil and Criminal Procedure Rules
  • Regulated professionals, undergoing annual appraisal, five-year revalidation, and ongoing CPD
  • NHS practitioners, with strong clinical networks to support signposting and referrals

This ensures you receive objective, reliable evidence that meets the highest professional and legal standards.

Our commitment

We know that the quality of psychiatric written and oral evidence can be highly variable and how much this can negatively impact proceedings. Our mission is to ensure consistent, high-quality, objective expert evidence that can be robustly tested and relied upon in Courts and Tribunals. Because we are led by doctors, all our work is subject to peer-review and oversight to make sure we deliver this.

Types of cases we support

We have experience in a wide range of psychiatric assessments, including:

  • Fitness to plead
  • Mental disorder defences
  • Recommendations based on mentally disordered offenders sentencing guidance
  • Hospital order disposals
  • Assessments of risk and dangerousness
  • Parental mental disorder and substance misuse
  • Childhood mental health
  • Autism and ADHD assessment and diagnosis
